After cutting our leads, we hand edge them on each side - both front and back. This gives a more professional finished look, and is more comfortable to the hand.

For wide leads - 5/8" or wider, we cut a small leather wedge which is sewn inside the fold, just behind the snap. The wedge creates a nice hole for the snap to move in, plus takes the stress off the end stitches.

We sew each end for a stronger job & neater appearance. The wide leads are machine stitched, using only the strongest, non-rotting thread we know of. (That sounds elemental, but is rare today.) Narrow leads are not wedged or machine stitched, but are hand sewn with a flax sinew, which we first coat with wax before stitching.

We use solid bronze snaps in standard sizes, but will gladly make yours with something special.
